I knew there were things like diamond anniversary or jubilee, but I honestly did know that there is a leather anniversary. At least not until a co-worker of my husband asked me to make a set of luggage tags for her 3rd anniversary. So let’s take a look at the history behind tradition and its meaning.
The tradition of prescribed gift giving on wedding anniversaries might have roots in Ancient Rome or Medieval Germany. As with a lot of traditions, the exact origin is unknown. It seems that for certain that in 18th Century Germany, it had become a customary act.
You might be familiar with the popularization of Christmas trees and white wedding dresses during the Victorian era. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were quite the trend setters. This era is characterized by romanticism, a rise in love matching, and growing consumerism. As the tradition continued to evolve, specific materials were attributed to anniversaries. By the early 20th Century, the idea had fully caught on with an exhaustive yearly list. In the 1910 edition of The Standard Home Reference Library leather was included on the list. This was no doubt spurred on by the rise of department stores like Eatons, Simpsons, or Selfridges who could literally and figuratively capitalize on this tradition.
The third anniversary is traditionally considered the leather anniversary, however, in more recent times, it has shifted to the ninth anniversary (for some reason). Not biased or anything, but I think it should be both!
The meaning behind the leather anniversary comes from the qualities that leather represents, namely strength, durability, and flexibility. Leather continually transforms, but with care, retains its strength and beauty. To take it one step further, we can draw on the idea of perfection in imperfection. As leather ages and wears from use, it can develop a patina that just adds to the beauty. Marriage can have its ups and downs and challenges. You evolve through these lessons, just as leather is always changing as it ages.
If you are interested in a custom leather item for your anniversary, whether it is your third, ninth, or thirty-ninth, I would be happy to work with you to create a piece that celebrates your connection. Except for the kinky stuff – you gotta get that somewhere else.
